Announcing our 2019 Keynote Speaker: Ajamou Butler, Founder of Heal the Hood MKE
Ajamou Butler was born and raised on the north side of Milwaukee, WI. Having grown up in Milwaukee’s worst zip code, 53206, he was exposed to the ugliest sides of poverty. Throughout his childhood, Ajamou’s parents did their best to keep him exposed to the arts (African Drum, martial arts, and acting class) and although the world around him told him that he was destined to fail, the arts helped to keep him alive while teaching him discipline, culture, and creativity.
In September of 2011, Ajamou’s life divinely changed for the better when his son was born. Having a son made him look deeper into the ever increasing violence in the city amongst people of color. This sparked a desire to help bring peace in Milwaukee. Heal the Hood MKE was born in May 2012 and since then has hosted 1-4 resource fairs/block parties a year with an attendance rate of 300-500 people! These block parties offer free food, live music, a children’s area, vendors and more. Heal the Hood has also done programming in more than 34 institutions of learning since it began.
In addition to being the founder of Heal the Hood, Ajamou works at Milwaukee Collegiate Academy High School where he:
Facilitates their male mentorship group (9th-12th grade)
Facilitates their spoken word curriculum for the 9th, 10th, and 11th grades
Is their Parent Liaison and Community Engagement Specialist
We are very excited to have Ajamou as this year's keynote speaker! To learn more about Heal the Hood MKE, visit their website: https://healthehoodmke.org/
